 Company Background
From a country inn in the Alps to the global corporation Nike more and more companies want to be carbon neutral. The Hamburg-based climate protection specialist Greenmiles offers small and large companies the chance to undertake an inventory of their greenhouse gases. In a next step, the emissions collected can be reduced and offset through internal and external measures as well as communicated to the public. The greenmiles-matrix, which was designed by Greenmiles for this purpose, allows for a systematic and at the same time modular approach to inventorying the emissions of different corporate divisions. Whether in sector mobility, energy supply or production: Greenmiles helps to collect, analyze, and classify the greenhouse gasses emitted. The emissions can be then reduced through internal corporate measures (e.g., increased efficiency) as well as fully offset by external climate protection projects. With respect to external compensation, Greenmiles assists the company in selecting suitable climate protection projects that have been recommended by the UN. Project Requirements
Based on an established website design greenmiles required a slight face-lift and modernization. The main goal however was the development of a Carbon Footprint Calculator that lets visitors calculate their own personal emissions and determine their carbon footprint. This how the Carbon Foot print Calculator works: Greenmiles' carbon calculator helps users calculating their personal CO2 emissions. They depend on their housing and living conditions, their mobility behaviour and their consumer buying habits. The calculation itself is not a secret science, but it is based on a study of the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) "The Carbon Balance of a Citizen" („Die CO2-Bilanz des Bürgers“) By following the steps of the calculator through each area and by indicating their consumption and behaviour the users will receive their personal CO2 footprint. Their own personal value can be compared to the value of a person with an average CO2 footprint. Users are receiving help and information to the different areas automatically by moving their mouse over the questions. The bar chart on the right hand side will accompany them through the calculations, showing their personal emissions in comparison to average national emissions.
After indicating all necessary data, users will receive tips and ideas to improve their personal CO2 balance. Afterward users can avoid, reduce or compensate emissions. Users are able to register and open a password protected account where all the data is stored for future usage. Beside the Calculator a small shopping Cart was established that allows uses to spend gained or purchased greenmiles. In that Shop are sold climate friendly products. Users are able to receive greenmiles by purchasing them directly over the greenmiles website with credit card (WorldPay integration) or they can convert vouchers received by the greenmiles partner program.
Another goal was to establish an easy to use Content Management System that allows the greenmiles team to add and edit articles, products and other website content. The whole system allows translations and easy handling in different languages. All website Contents are manageable through an easy to use admin panel where administrator can filter user rights to give access to different back-end information.
